My completely non-scientific, personal-opinion-based, very-biased Top 20 songs of 2013.
- #20 – CAZZETTE – Beam Me Up
An early-2013 song that had potential but didn’t quite break. - #19 – David Guetta feat. Ne-Yo & Akon – Play Hard
A remake/mix of Alice DJ’s “Better Off Alone” from the 90s deserves at least an honorable mention. - #18 – Bonnie McKee – American Girl
An artist who’s produced more hits than you’ll ever actually know who also happens to be an amazing talent (and perfectionist). The bass line alone makes this song worth of “best of 2013” status. - #17 – Twenty One Pilots – Holding On To You
This song amazingly broke into the pop charts with scream-o lyrics for a reason, it’s damn good! - #16 – Zedd feat. Foxes! – Clarity
One of Zedd’s many entries in this chart, the vocals by Foxes! makes this one of the biggest EDM/Pop songs of the year. - #15 – Avicii feat. Aloe Blacc – Wake Me Up
An album that was shunned on its release for being an odd mix of country and EDM becomes one of the biggest songs of the year. Bravo Avicii for going outside the box and winning. - #14 – John Newman – Love Me Again
A booming-British-male voice took time to gain traction in America but eventually made it. - #13 – Macklemore & Ryan Lewis feat. Ray Dalton – Can’t Hold Us
Easily the year for Macklemore & Ryan Lewis where they may have set the bar high for themselves (hopefully not). Absolutely the biggest party anthem of the year. - #12 – Madeon – Technicolor
Another breakthrough artist of the year, but still not as widely known – Madeon. The young French kid has gotten the nod from Ellie Goulding (below) and Lady Gaga. 2014 will be a big year for him. - #11 – Robin Thicke feat. Kendrick Lamar – Give It 2 U
The sleeper hit on the Robin Thicke album the song combines smooth vocals and kick-ass synth. - #10 – Erin Bowman – King Boy
My totally-biased pick for artist-to-watch-in-2014, Erin brings a 90s dance sound that is on its way back and she’s leading the charge. - #9 – Ellie Goulding – Burn
After “Lights”, Ellie has proven she’s not a One Hit Wonder. She has the vocals but the biggest hurdle has been combining it with the beats to match. Halcyon Days brings that and then some. - #8 – Katy Perry – This Is How We Do
I mentioned a return to 90s-esque sounds and here’s one of the biggest pop stars doing just that. The most dance-worthy song from PRISM. - #7 – Lady Gaga – Sexx Dreams
Like Katy Perry’s track-list-burried “This Is How We Do”, this isn’t expected to be Gaga’s second (or even third) single… but it should. DJ White Shaddow’s beat makes this the best track off ARTPOP. - #6 – Alex Clare – Too Close
One of the few songs on the list that came over from the prior year – the deep bass and singable chorus made this early-2013’s best song… also thanks to Microsoft Bing (of all things). - #5 – Pitbull feat. Ke$ha – Timber
There’s something about “Pop Meets Country” that seems to work this year. To round out the year, Pitbull delivered a dance hit for New Year’s. - #4 – Ellie Goulding feat. Madeon – Stay Awake
These are two breakout artists this year who then combined for this, another sleeper hit that will be big in 2014 (I promise). - #3 – The Neighborhood – Sweater Weather
More artists-to-watch-in-2014, NBHD brings alt-rock mainstream in a field that is very narrowed this year. Only because this was… - #2 – Zedd feat. Hayley Williams – Stay The Night
…the year of EDM music. The biggest songs of the year were all EDM which makes this a breakout year for the genre thanks to artists like Zedd and… - #1 – Cash Cash feat. Bebe Rexha – Take Me Home
…Cash Cash. EDM music is dance and sing-along worthy with a demographic that grew up appreciating electronica, all other genres now bow to EDM.
